About Relief Lab

An African institution advancing humanitarian and development action through data, evidence and innovation.

Humanitarian and development organizations exist to improve people's lives. They provide healthcare, education, food assistance, protection services, emergency response, livelihoods support and countless other interventions that address some of the world's most pressing challenges. However, behind every successful programme lies a critical but often under-resourced function: data.

Data makes it possible to identify needs, understand populations, design effective interventions, allocate resources, monitor progress, measure impact and inform decisions. It is the foundation of accountability, learning, research, innovation and evidence-based action. Without reliable data and strong information systems, organizations cannot fully understand whether their programmes are reaching the right people, achieving the intended results or creating lasting change.

Yet many organizations face limitations in the resources, expertise and systems required to fully leverage the power of data. Relief Lab was created to help bridge this gap.

We strengthen the capacities of aspiring and experienced humanitarian and development professionals through training, certification, mentorship and continuous learning. We support organizations in building stronger information systems, improving data quality, generating evidence, conducting research, implementing digital health solutions, managing surveys and transforming data into actionable insights.

Our work spans research, learning, innovation, evidence generation and field systems. We collaborate with governments, United Nations agencies, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions and development partners to strengthen the people, processes and technologies that drive data-informed decision-making.

At Relief Lab, we believe that better data leads to better decisions, better programmes and ultimately better outcomes for the communities that humanitarian and development actors serve.
